Habak Desert Mint “Mentha longifolia”
Habak Desert Mint is a mint variety native to northeastern Africa with characteristic long spikes and tiny blue flowers. It grows wherever water is abundantly available either near or at the surface of the ground. The plant is an aromatic shrub with jagged-edged leaves that grow opposite each other.
Habak Desert Mint is botanically classified as Mentha longifolia and belongs to the Lamiaceae or mint family. Its Latin name, longifolia, refers to the plant’s unusually long leaves.
Habek mint is also commonly known as Wild mint, Bible mint, or Horse mint.
Common Uses
The fresh leaves are used in salads, chutneys, relishes, and various cooked dishes and can be used in place of spearmint, leaves are also commonly used to make a soothing tea, and can be stored fresh in the refrigerator for up to one week or dried and stored in an airtight container for extended use.
Medicinal Uses
It helps the scurf or dandruff of the head used with vinegar and also helps a stinking breath, proceeding from corruption of the teeth.
